The London bombings have been tragic, loss of life; a sense of insecurity, an actual exportation of the terror of the Middle East is being brought to the homes of western civilians. These bombings, combined with the September 11 genocide, have caused a major stir in the way of life of the metropolitan west. Stricter immigration laws,  tedious air travel, random car searches etc. A times I wonder why they bother, the Israeli’s have been living under these conditions for while with their Palestinian neighbors eager to strike back with suicide bombs, and have failed miserably to stop this, what makes the west think they can stop a person intent on causing killing themselves and a few to strike fear into the hearts of many?

Upon several casual conversations I have pondered the motives of the terrorist. Granted they wanted a big bang effect with the 2 towers, I am considerably relieved that they didn’t go after the NYC subway system. There are about 20 main lines in NY, and there were allegedly the same number of terrorist. I shudder at the thought of each one of them going bomb strapped in underground subway system at rush hour. Can you imagine the chaos, the number of people stuck in the system, and the overall psychological effect on the NYC populace?  That impact on a system that transports over 20 million people daily would have crippled the city beyond belief. Loss in tourism, people moving, and just the plain sick realization that your subway ride is just as dangerous as being I a war torn zone.

Apparently, thy have attempted to shut down London with bombs going off in the city. They have failed miserably; the world is tighter on arms, and bomb makings devices. Immigration is also tighter; they are not detonating less potent bombs in a subway system, and causing damage to life and failing in their missions. The only thing they have succeeded in doing is changing the way of life of the average Western resident.  With the July 21th attempted bombing, NYC police have now instituted a random search requirement to a typical NY commuter. Today being the 22nd, I saw as they constantly profiled men of Middle Eastern, far eastern origins. The commute was annoyingly longer.

Our lives have changed, but I bark at the fact that we are only looking at reactionary measures as against preventive measures. Preventive measures will involve re-evaluating policies in the Middle East. Attempt to create an environment of trust, and win as many fundamentalists as possible. The west has to stop being portrayed as the bully but more as an ally. Then again this is easier said than done.

Until then, no more carrying, liquor in back packs, no more carrying drug cash in back packs  , or even metals, because now in this state of paranoia mass transportation is not as free, as it used to be.

The power of dementia is a theme exploited heavily in the latest installment of the Batman Chronicles. The script writers aptly play on the basic psychological issues that define people to become who they are. Dementia is seen as the powerful tool that destroys not only core fulcrum of the society, but society at large. In this movie, I understand the role of the League of Shadows; I am enthralled by their motives, and the efficacy with which they apply them. The use of fear as a tool of control, plus as a catalyst for success is quite exciting. Dementia, Fear, Control, these tools I feel are necessary in the right doses for society to thrive. I look at present day, out of fear, dementia, and absolute lack of control, anarchy breeds at an uncontrollable rate. We as a people have to learn to channel our fears for motivation, channel that fear as a support system.

Anyhow, I am rambling. All in All Batman Begins was a great movie.

The world is yet again in awe about the allegedly barbaric events that occurred in London this week. I sit back and wonder why there is such uproar over the loss of life of 50 UK residents. Do not mistake me for a sadist, but this is business as usual. There are unreported deaths in Iraq, and Afghanistan, pretty much the entire Middle East. Israeli’s go through constant bombardment, and basically live their freight. Yet the only uproar is the battle in the Middle East has been brought to the west.

We sit back and are only touched when instances of genocide, affect the west. There is crisis all over the world but we are stuck on the west is better mindset. I cringe at the insensitivity of the common man to plights of others. A chilling line from the movie Hotel Rwanda says it all “People will look at the TV and say this is horrible, and then go back to eating their diners”.

We have to look behind our comfort zones; we have to take a stance on issues that affect the rest of the world. The Middle east crisis has been ignored for too long, and now with the invasion of Iraq has escalated. The seed of hate is being planted more and more. We should look back at statements made by  famous speakers like Ghandi, and Dr.Martin Luther King, and realize that peace is the most effective way to get our requests and demands across.

To all that have lost someone, and have been affected by man’s inhumanity to man., I salute you and pray that you find the strength to overcome, and more importantly to forgive.

May the Force be with You ! This is the theme for the weekend. The final installment of the Star Wars saga, has brought about a sense of excitement, nostalgia, and borderline curiosity. Why the obsession over George Lucas’ masterpiece? Why are people willing to pay over the US minimum wage to see a movie that they already know the conclusion?

For me this is simple, it is all about the religion. The Jedi order becomes destroyed, by the very “one” that was meant to “bring balance to the force”. Sounds familiar? There is that recurring notion of the “One”. This “One” has appeared in most facets of popular religion, folklore, mythology, and is thoroughly embedded in our consciousness.

Whether the “One” is “Christ”, “Buddha”, “Neo” or “Anakin Skywalker”, we sit waiting on prophesies or misinterpretations thereof and live our lives hoping for this messiah to arrive.

Star Wars does not only excite the boyhood excitement for adventure it also carries with it several political themes. The frailties of a Democracy in war time, the emergence and necessity for strong centralized leadership, and the consequences of Dictatoships are also prominent themes.

This movie, this masterpiece is the embodiment of all political intertwining that occurs in our galaxy, and more precisely our planet, hence kudos to Lucas for pulling this off.

Till My Next Entry …. “May the Force Be With You”.
